Description

On November 15, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the historic Suk Hall of Prague’s Rudolfinum will host an unforgettable evening of Romantic music, performed by violinist Karen Su, laureate of the 2024 Queen Elisabeth Competition, and Dutch pianist Ruben Plazier. The program brings together two of the most celebrated violin sonatas ever written — works that combine lyrical beauty, passionate drama, and masterful craftsmanship. The evening begins with Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor, Op. 45, completed in 1887. This is Grieg’s most dramatic and powerful chamber work, infused with the rhythms, colors, and folk-inspired melodies of Norway. It opens with bold, storm-like energy, contrasted by lyrical passages of deep nostalgia. The second movement offers moments of intimate beauty, before the finale bursts forth with fiery dance-like drive, carrying the audience to an exhilarating close. The second half of the program features César Franck’s Violin Sonata in A major, composed in 1886 as a wedding gift to the legendary Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. Over its four movements, Franck creates an intimate yet expansive musical journey, with long-breathed melodies, shimmering harmonies, and moments of striking emotional intensity. The interplay between violin and piano is at once conversational and deeply expressive, culminating in a radiant finale that leaves a lasting impression. Violinist Karen Su has earned international acclaim for her “confidence and drive… warmth and intensity” (The Strad). As a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, she stands among the most distinguished musicians of her generation. She has appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras and has performed in many of the world’s most respected concert halls. Pianist Ruben Plazier is known for his refined touch, expressive range, and ability to bring deep narrative into his performances. His artistry has taken him to prominent stages across Europe, where audiences and critics alike have praised his sensitivity and interpretative depth. Together, Su and Plazier form a partnership of rare musical chemistry, bringing freshness and insight to every work they perform.
