Description
Think visiting Prague Castle means walking through grand royal apartments and State Rooms? Unfortunately, those rooms are normally closed to the public.
The standard visitor experience instead gives access to individual historic sites such as St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane.
This tour takes a different approach. Prague Castle's story is written on the outside.
Founded around 880 AD, Prague Castle forms part of Prague's UNESCO World Heritage Site. But Prague Castle isn't just a historic monument. It is one of the largest and oldest castle complexes in the world — a living seat of power that has evolved continuously for more than 1,100 years and remains the official seat of the Czech presidency.
Much of the complex continues to serve government, religious and ceremonial functions, meaning significant parts are not open to the public. Yet its courtyards, façades, churches, palaces and changing architectural styles reveal how the Castle developed and how more than a thousand years of history have shaped it.
Instead of moving between separate ticketed interiors, this fully outdoor tour allows you to understand Prague Castle as a complete historical and architectural whole — its layout, development and significance told as one continuous story.
Through the vision of Charles IV, who transformed medieval Prague into an imperial capital; the extraordinary court of Rudolf II, where art, science and alchemy flourished; the centuries of Habsburg rule; and the presidents of modern Czechia, you'll understand how each era left its mark on Prague Castle and helped shape the Czech nation.
The tour is conducted entirely outdoors. We do not enter the ticketed interiors and no Castle admission ticket is required.
By the end of the tour, you'll know not only what you're looking at — but why it matters.
You'll also understand which parts of Prague Castle are open to the public, which remain closed, what you'll find inside the ticketed buildings and which may be worth visiting afterwards. You can then decide for yourself how you want to spend the rest of your time at the Castle.
Most visitors leave Prague Castle having seen it. Our guests leave understanding it.
