Traditional Czech Dumpling Making Class

Central Bohemian Region, Prague

Roll up your sleeves and master Czech dumplings from scratch — three delicious ways, from savory bread dumplings with chicken paprikash to a sweet fruit-filled dessert.

Highlights

  • One of Prague's only cooking classes fully dedicated to real Czech knedlíky.
  • Knead your own dough and master three completely different dumpling dishes.
  • Try a rustic smoked-meat potato dumpling most tourists never taste.
  • Small groups of up to 10 mean real hands-on guidance, not a demo.
  • Seasonal fruit dumplings mean every visit can taste a little different.

Description

Knedlíky are at the heart of Czech home cooking — yet most visitors never get the chance to actually make one. The class starts with a short introduction to the tradition of Czech Sunday lunches and the story behind the country's many regional dumpling varieties. You'll then knead and shape your own bread dumpling dough from scratch. While it rises, you'll move on to preparing a potato dumpling filled with smoked meat — a beloved rustic dish that's traditionally enjoyed on its own, and one that most tourists in Prague never get the chance to try, let alone cook themselves. Once your bread dumpling dough has risen, you'll shape and cook it, then finish a traditional chicken paprikash sauce to go with it — a classic pairing you may recognize from Czech restaurants. To finish, you'll shape and cook a sweet dumpling filled with seasonal fruit (apricots in summer, otherwise strawberries or blueberries, depending on what's in season) — a dessert every Czech grandmother has her own version of. By the end of the class, you'll sit down to taste all three dishes you made yourself, alongside a specialty coffee or homemade lemonade.

Important Information

  • This class involves hands-on food preparation — we recommend wearing comfortable clothing you don't mind getting a little floury. Aprons are provided. The seasonal fruit filling in the sweet dumpling depends on what's fresh at the time of your visit (apricots in summer, otherwise strawberries or blueberries) — the exact fruit may vary.
