Description
There is something quietly magical about Czech blue porcelain. For more than three centuries, artisans in Bohemia have been hand-painting these unmistakable cobalt-blue patterns — delicate flowers, twining vines, pomegranates and peonies — onto pure white porcelain. You see it in family kitchens, in grand hotels, in museum collections across Europe. It is one of the most beloved symbols of Czech craft, and in this workshop, you become part of that story.
Welcome to Topka Studio, a working ceramics studio tucked away in Prague where the table is set for you with a blank porcelain plate, a palette of cobalt-blue paints, fine brushes, and a cup of warm Czech tea. Your instructor will introduce you to the history of cibulák — the 'onion pattern' that traveled from China to Saxony to Bohemia and became Czech in the process — and show you the brushwork that has defined it for generations.
Then it's your turn. With patient, hands-on guidance, you'll learn how to load the brush, how to draw the soft floral curves, how to build up the layers of blue. You can follow a traditional motif or invent your own pattern in the same blue palette — there are no wrong answers, only beautiful ones.
When you're done, your plate will be carefully packed in a gift box so you can carry it home in your suitcase — a one-of-a-kind souvenir of Prague, painted by your own hand, in a tradition older than most of the city's cafés.
This workshop is suiatable for all ages and requires no previous painting experience.
