Prague Nightwatchman Walking Tour
This 90-minute evening walking tour in Prague’s Old Town suits history enthusiasts and evening visitors seeking a unique, story-driven experience.
Description
Step into Prague of 1633, when the nightwatchman patrolled the streets with a halberd and lantern, ensuring safety under strict curfew. This guided tour features a costumed 17th-century nightwatchman who shares the darker, unfiltered stories of Prague’s past, including executions, plagues, and fires.
The tour covers about 1.5 to 2 km, starting at the Powder Gate and ending at Charles Bridge. Along the way, you will:
- Learn about the 1621 execution of 27 Protestant leaders on Old Town Square and see the crosses marking the event
- Visit the Estates Theatre, site of Mozart’s Don Giovanni world premiere in 1787, and hear why Prague held this honour
- Discover medieval fire safety rules that surprisingly involve beer
- Hear why the builder of Charles Bridge never crossed it
- Experience the nightwatchman’s traditional horn call, performed loudly and without warning
The tour concludes with a group photo on Charles Bridge and the nightwatchman’s signature final check of locked doors.
Who This Tour Is For
This tour suits anyone interested in history told through vivid stories rather than plaques. No prior knowledge of Prague or medieval laws is needed. It is ideal for evening visitors after museum hours, history lovers wanting unfiltered facts, and families. While the content is occasionally dark, it is presented theatrically rather than graphically, making it memorable for children.
