Here’s the scoop from someone who lives here

Honestly, I think the best day trips from Prague happen when you just pick a town that sounds interesting and roll with it. For instance, the village of Mělník isn’t talked about much, but it’s a great spot if you like wine and river views. The castle there has a fantastic cellar where you can taste local Moravian wines, and the little market square has great cafes to lounge in.

Also, don’t underestimate public transport. Trains are comfortable and super reliable, and many sites have frequent buses from the stations. Seriously, check out the Czech Railways app for live schedules. It’s saved me more than once when plans changed at the last minute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? Here are a few answers from someone who’s done these day trips plenty of times.

The train from Prague’s Main Station is hands-down the simplest choice. It takes about 40 minutes, and the castle is just a short but uphill walk from the station. I’d recommend grabbing a map at the station or just following the signs through the village,it’s hard to get lost!
It depends on how much context you want. Some spots, like Kutná Hora, have fascinating history you might miss on your own. But I often prefer going solo, or with a friend, so I can poke around at my own pace and avoid the tour bus crowds.
You can, but it’s pushing it. The train and bus connections take around three hours each way. I’d suggest staying overnight if you want to really enjoy the town without rushing.
Try the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. It’s about two hours by train and bus, and the rock formations and hiking trails are stunning. Just pack good shoes, you’ll want them.
Absolutely, it’s a popular day trip spot. Trains run regularly, and the town is small enough to explore on foot once you arrive. The bone church can get busy midday, so I’d see it either first thing or late afternoon.
