It’s a quick trip southwest, perched on a hill with stunning views and a cozy village at its base. If you get there by afternoon, the light hitting the castle walls is something else.

Winter visitors, take note: the frozen Vltava River near the countryside spots sometimes looks magical, especially around Český Šternberk Castle. The trains to these places run often,and if you show up with some snacks and a sense of adventure, you’ll find plenty of quiet corners to enjoy. Honestly, I think the best day trips from Prague happen when you just pick a town that sounds interesting and roll with it. For instance, the village of Mělník isn’t talked about much, but it’s a great spot if you like wine and river views. The castle there has a fantastic cellar where you can taste local Moravian wines, and the little market square has great cafes to lounge in.

Also, don’t underestimate public transport. Trains are comfortable and super reliable, and many sites have frequent buses from the stations. Seriously, check out the Czech Railways app for live schedules. It’s saved me more than once when plans changed at the last minute.
